You can hardly open the paper or turn on the TV without learning about some new potion or pill that claims to detoxify your system.  Well, you might be wondering if you need to worry about detoxifying as well.  The answer is yes!  No matter what method you choose, these days detoxification is an important component to include in any health, weight loss or prevention regimen.  Here&#8217;s why..</p>
<p>We live in incredibly advanced and complicated times where much of what we take into our bodies on a daily basis was never meant to be there.  For example, there are over 70,000 chemicals used commercially today which lead to more than 4 billion pounds of toxic chemicals being released into the environment each year&#8211; bi-products of  processes such as manufacturing, production and transportation. 4 Billion Pounds! Not to mention the fact that 72 Million Of Those Are Known Carcinogens, or Cancer Causing Agents. </p>
<p>Even our water is under assault.  It was recently discovered that the water supplies of most major US cities contain traces of a wide variety of pharmaceutical drugs, ranging from sleeping aids to baldness cures, medicines for depression and other psychological disorders&#8211; things you don&#8217;t want hanging around in your drinking water! <p>There is one fundamental reason as to why you haven&#8217;t been able to loose the pounds despite your most dogged and sincere efforts.  And that reason boils down to one word&#8211; TOXICITY!  All disease&#8211; including excess weight&#8211; stems from the same problem. It&#8217;s the result of a build up of waste materials in the body.  In fact, I often tell my clients that fat is their friend. <p>Ever wonder why it is that you can get out and run and run and run in beautiful Georgetown and not seem to lose the weight? Well some of the latest research suggests that if a man works out at his target heart rate for a full one hour per day and he did this for a full six days every week for the period of one year, that man would lose six and one half pounds of body fat per year.</p>
<p>In essence, to lose 20 pounds at most, you would need to exercise approximately 20 hours a week!</p>
<p>If you have heard that with aerobic exercise you can effectively burn fat, then you are privy to the biggest myth in fitness and personal training today. Fitness experts or high priced personal trainers often will present you with a couple of reasons aerobics should be part of your fat-losing regimen:</p>
<p>Myth#1: You can burn more calories with aerobic exercise. Although aerobics dose burn calories, it is not as efficient as people believe. For instance, to burn roughly 500 calories you would need to work out 45 minutes on an elliptical machine.</p>
<p>On the other hand, by doing 30 minutes of resistance training such as weight lifting, and approximately 15 minutes alternating between high and low intensity exercise also known as interval training you will burn 40% more in the same amount of time! That is roughly 700 calories! As an added benefit that aerobics doesn&#8217;t give you, your metabolism stays elevated for 24 to 36 hours after this work out.</p>
<p>Given the fast pace of life in Georgetown, the later is much better alternative.  Also, you don&#8217;t need a personal trainer to supervise all of your workouts.  As long as they create a detailed plan for you, then you can get great results without having to see them every day.</p>
<p>Myth #2: Aerobic exercise will put you in your fat burning zone. Yes, you will burn a greater percentage of calories from fat during your aerobic workout, but keep in mind that this is a larger percentage of a smaller number so its less fat overall. Also, resistance training has been repeatedly shown to increase the percentage of calories that your body burns from fat during the rest of the day, which is when we burn 80 to 90% of our calories.</p>
<p>The reality is that 15 minutes of interval training will do more for your cardiovascular fitness than 45 minutes of jogging.  So, if you start talking to a personal trainer in Georgetown and they start talking about how you need to go jogging or do cardio for 45min per day, run the other way!</p>
<p>Here is a great, free workout no personal trainers in site, which you can, do right here in Georgetown:</p>
<p>#1. Walk over to M street and locate the Exxon gas station, were going to start at the Exorcist steps.</p>
<p>#2.  Warm-up:  Walk up the stairs once, and walk down.  Jog up once and walk down.</p>
<p>#3. Now that you are warmed up run to the very top of the stairs, walk down and rest for approximately one minute at the bottom. Repeat this for 15 minutes or 12 times whichever comes first.</p>
<p>You&#8217;ve just gotten better results in less time with a great view of Georgetown.</p>
